RULES FOR WRITING 

IUPAC NAMES FOR

ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

• 01. IUPAC name = prefix +word root +suffix
• 02. No. of carbon atoms of the longest continuous carbon chain containing functional group determines the word root.
• 

• 03. Carbons are numbered such that multiple bonds &/or substitutions & /or functional groups are numbered least .
• 04. The numbering of the main chain is done in the direction which gives the lowest number to the first branching point.
• 05.  The nature of the  side chains or substitution  determines the prefix with proper number.
• Functional groups expressed only as prefixes.

06.  The order of listing the branch prefixes is alphabetic before the addition of the multiple  prefix identifiers such as di, tri, etc .

07. The position identifier (locant) is prefixed to the name of the branch using hyphens to separate the position identifiers from the name. If there are two or more of the same branch in a given molecule the prefixes di, tri, tetra, etc., are used together with a set of position identifiers, one for each of the branches, with the position identifiers separated by commas.

08. When two or more multiple bonds or substitutions are present are present  sum  rule is applied. 

09. The carbon atoms of the chain terminating group  is numbered  one. 

10. Primary suffix is added after the word root name to indicate   nature of carbon  bonds. 

Secondary Suffix is used to indicate nature of the functional group.

11.  For polyfunctional compounds sequence of priority is followed.
